How Many Applications

About

About this calculator

This site answers one question: how many applications does it take to get a job? It gives a clear, sourced answer first, then a calculator you can use with your own numbers.

Why it exists

Job searching can feel personal when the replies do not come. The numbers show that most applications do not lead to an interview, for almost everyone. Seeing the real averages can make a search easier to plan, and easier to read.

Where the numbers come from

Every number is taken from a public source and shown with its year:

  • The United Way of the National Capital Area 2026 survey of 1,000 US job seekers.
  • The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), using Current Population Survey data from 2018 and the latest unemployment duration figures.
  • The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) student surveys for new graduates.
  • A Glassdoor study of how long interview processes take.

The Sources section lists each figure, what it means, and its limits. Where no source exists, for example offers per interview, the page says so and labels the number an estimate.

Independent, with nothing to sell

This site is independent. It is not part of any job board, recruiter, employer or government agency. It does not sell anything, run ads, ask you to sign up, or collect your email. The calculator runs in your browser, and what you type stays there.

How it stays accurate

Figures are checked against the original pages where we can, and anything we could not trace to a primary source is left out. We re-check the numbers that change over time before relying on them.
